“Love Live! Sunshine!!” is to make the leap to the big screen following its successes in manga and on TV.
The animated feature film adaptation will tell a new story about idol group Aqours, pronounced as “aqua.”
“Love Live! Sunshine!!” was launched in the Dengeki G’s Magazine manga and video game publication in April 2015 as the second installment of the “Love Live!” multimedia project series featuring high school girls who become idols to prevent their schools from shutting down.
Aqours’ first single was released in October 2015, and the first season of the animated TV series adaptation premiered in July 2016. The second season followed in October 2017.
The series’ first animated feature film released in 2015, “Love Live! The School Idol Movie,” received an award for excellence in the animation category of the Japan Academy Film Prize awards. It also raked in 2.86 billion yen ($26.3 million) at the Japanese box office.
The “Love Live!” series has also become popular outside Japan.
Comprising voice actresses who play members of the idol group in the anime, Aqours performed their first live concert and attended a meet-and-greet event in Seoul in November 2017. The group also took to the stage and greeted fans in Shanghai on Jan. 20, before heading to Taipei for the first time on Feb. 10.
The release date for the new movie has yet to be announced.
